Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE) on Thursday to rename roads and buildings in defence cantonments that have named after British soldiers and officers.
The DGDE, manages about 62 cantonment boards across India and over 20 lakh people live in these cantonment boards.
During his address to an event of the DGDE, Rajnath Singh pointed out that even in the 75th year of Indian independence, many streets and buildings in cantonment boards have been named after British soldiers and officers who fought for the British Crown.
“We should keep in mind that the names of those British soldiers and officers, who have done any kind of commendable work for the region or the country, should be kept as they are and the next generation should be made acquainted with their work,” the minister further said during his speech.
The DGDE works under Ministry of Defence and it provides public services such as sanitation, primary education, healthcare, etc, in a defence cantonment area.
