Russia is cautious about the potential impact of a civil war in war-torn Afghanistan on its own territory and on what may happen to refugees and radicals in Eurasia, which is why it has offered to mediate between the Taliban and the National Resistance Force (NRF).
Russian Special Representative on Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov on Tuesday said that Moscow is ready to receive representatives from Afghanistan to deliberate on the situation in the war-ravaged nation.
Russian state-run news agency TASS quoted Kabulov as saying the Russian officials are willing to convene meetings between the two groups in Afghanistan. He said that Moscow has repeatedly announced their desire to welcome Taliban and NRF to Russia.
NRF sources told Tolo News that Russia mediated a meeting lately between the Taliban and the National Resistance Force. On January 24, former Afghan Intel Chief Rahmatullah Nabil, Mullah Yaqoob Mujahid, and Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar were reportedly in Moscow.
