The new Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida and the Russian president Vladimir Putin are expected to visit India next month.
It will be a balancing act for India as there is a rising pushback against the S-400 missile defense system, which is expected to be delivered to India around the same time. In the run-up to Putin’s visit, the Indian defence and foreign ministers will hold a two-plus-two meeting with their American counterparts by the end of November.
After extending Russia a $1 billion credit line, talks between Putin and PM Modi are expected to cover India’s forays into the Artic and the Siberian Far East, a vast area with deposits of gold, oil, and diamonds that have yet to be explored.
With the Japanese PM, talks are likely to touch defence, though in the area of purchase, the Japanese view is that their equipment is expensive for India.
