Sepoy Ajay Kumar was a native of Bassi Tikri village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. He was born to an Army veteran Veerpal Singh. He joined the Army in the year 2011. After serving with his parent unit, he was deputed to serve with 55 Rastriya Rifles battalion deployed in J&K.

During 2018-19, Sepoy Ajay’s unit was posted in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the Pulwama attack incident of 14th February 2019, the security forces were maintaining a state of high alert in the area. On 17th February 2019, the security forces received information from the credible sources regarding the presence of terrorists in Pinglan village of Pulwama. 55 RR along with Special Operation group of J&K Police launched a combine search operation. The assault team was led by Brigadier Harbir Singh. A fierce gun battle continued for 20 hours and many terrorists responsible for Pulwama attack were eliminated. However, during the heavy exchange of fire eleven soldiers were injured including Sepoy Ajay Singh, Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, Havildar Sheo Ram and Sepoy Hari Singh who unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.
Sepoy Ajay Kumar was awarded Sena Medal posthumously.
