Sepoy Dharma Ram Beniwal belonged to the Barmer district of Rajasthan. He joined the army just after completing his initial education in 2004. He recruited 4 Mahar of the famed Mahar Regiment. After serving in his parent unit, he deputed to serve with Rashtriya Rifles. There he was in 1 RR.

During 2015, 1 RR was deployed in the Kulgam sector in J & K. In the area 1 RR used to conduct various patrols, to search for any terrorist activity going in their area. On 25th May 2015, one such patrol was led by Major Kobitirha Sanyal of 1 RR. He was going towards Kanjikul village for the patrolling. Sepoy Dharma was part of the team. They were passing through the village, and they suddenly came under heavy firing from a nearby house at around 1300 hrs. Sep Dharma Ram exhibited the exemplary presence of mind to warn his team about the direction of fire and took on the terrorist himself to prevent any team member from getting injured. While he was fighting very bravely, he got hit by two bullets, but that injury could not break his will to fight and he kept on his fire. And he managed to injure a terrorist by crawling close towards him and then shooting him down. The terrorist was thus neutralized and identified as Lashkar-e-Taiba District Commander. Because of heavy blood loss, Sepoy Dharma Ram later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.
For his great act of bravery and excellence in firing, he was awarded ‘Shaurya Chakra’ posthumously.
