On 25th April 2014, the intelligence inputs hinted about the presence of terrorists in Kaajipathri village in the Shopian district. A team under the leadership of Major Mukund launched an operation to flush out terrorists. Sepoy Vikram was also a part of the team. They cordoned off the suspected area but the terrorists opened fire at the security forces. Sepoy Vikram repeatedly exposed himself to danger as he provided cover to Major Mukund. As Major Mukund Varadarajan was gravely injured in the process of eliminating two terrorists, Sepoy Vikram threw caution to the wind and displaying camaraderie and an acute sense of mission orientation jumped ahead of the officer while calling for his evacuation. But a third terrorist shot Sepoy Vikram and the brave soldier attained martyrdom.
For showing exemplary courage Sepoy Vikram was awarded ‘Shaurya Chakra’ posthumously.
