The Iranian government claimed Wednesday that it had prevented the US navy from seizing a tanker carrying Iranian oil in the Sea of Oman. The report did not mention the date of the incident or the country where the vessel is registered.
The report comes amid flailing efforts to revive Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers, which would eliminate US sanctions against its oil exports. “The United States stopped a tanker exporting Iranian oil and transferred its cargo to another tanker which it directed towards an unknown destination. The naval arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards then captured the tanker with air support,” it said.
Washington lifted its sanctions on Iran’s oil exports under the 2015 nuclear deal in exchange for strict limits on its nuclear activities. Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, reneged on the agreement in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
US President Joe Biden has expressed his willingness to rejoin the deal in exchange for Irn returning to the limits on its nuclear activities. The talks about the deal have been suspended since June this year.
