Serving the country, securing its borders and killing the intruders is always in mind for any person who wants to join the Army. Same was the thing with Sub. Nirmal Singh. He was just 20 years old when he joined the army and was commissioned into Sikh Regiment. The regiment which is known for its brave soldiers who fought various battles and won glory to the country.

By the time the Kargil War broke Sub Nirmal Singh had 20 years of service in his name. His unit was posted in the Drass sector during mid-May of 1999 under infantry brigade. Sikh Regiment along with 18 Grenadiers were given a task to capture Tiger Hill which was dominating the position in the sector which stood at 5062m. By then Nb. Sub Nirmal Singh was asked to lead the team one among 4 teams. With the loud war cry of their regiment” bole so Nihal, Sat Sri Akal” they launched toward the enemy and within the intense artillery fire from the enemy, steep slope of 80 degrees they managed to clear a few bunkers and enemy post by midnight. Spreading over vast areas and violent retaliation from enemy, Sub Nirmal Singh showed excellent hand to hand combat skill and close quarter fight. During this he got severely injured and wounded and later succumbed to his injuries. Sub Nirmal Singh was a dedicated soldier, inspiring and motivation for young JCOs who gave a supreme sacrifice for the country. For his bravery and courage, he was awarded Vir Chakra posthumously.
