Subedar Sanjeev Kumar was born on 5th December 1977. He was a native of Dehra village in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh. After completing his schooling, he joined the Indian Army in the year 1996, at the age of 18. He was recruited into the 4 Para (SF) battalion of the Parachute Regiment. He also had a stint in National Security Guard (NSG).

In 2020 Subedar Sanjeev’s unit was deployed in J&K. Acting upon the credible information from intelligence about the infiltration attempt by the terrorists in Kupwara district, the security forces launched operation Randori Behak on 1st April 2020. The soldiers deployed in the Karen sector repeatedly picked and lost track of terrorists so it was decided to launch para commandos by air in the suspected area. Subedar Sanjeev became part of this operation launched by a troop of 4 Para (SF). Subedar Sanjeev was tasked to lead the team. The terrain and weather of the area were harsh due to snow everywhere. With difficulty, the troop of commandos was able to spot the terrorists. A heavy exchange of fire took place between the two sides. Subedar Sanjeev managed to eliminate five terrorists. However, Indian soldiers too received injuries with Subedar Sanjeev and some other soldiers, namely, Hav Davendra Singh, Paratrooper Bal Krishan, Paratrooper Amit Kumar, and Paratrooper Chhatrapal Singh were martyred. 

For showcasing his bravery in the battlefield Subedar Sanjeev was given the second-highest peacetime gallantry award “Kirti Chakra” posthumously.
