Russia has commenced on the supply of S-400 components to India as per the $5.2 billion deal for five squadrons. The supply has been started a few weeks ahead of the proposed Indo-Russia summit slated to be held on December 6.
“The supplies of the S-400 air defence system to India have started and are proceeding as per the schedule,” Dmitry Shugaev, director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation told the news agency Sputnik FMTC.
The S-400 defence system is laced with four different missiles that can engage aircraft, AWACS, and ballistic missiles at 400 Km, 250 Km, 120 Km, and 40 Km.
As per ET sources, Russia is planning to offer S-500, an advanced version of S-400, to India. When Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Moscow in 2020, he was assured by his hosts of supply of the first squadron of the robust air defence system by the end of 2021.
