The Parliament on Thursday paid homage to Bangladeshi freedom fighters and Indian soldiers on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, marking 50 years of victory of India over Pakistan in the 1971 Liberation War.
Speaker of Lok Sabha Om Birla remembered the exemplary valiance displayed by freedom fighters of Bangladesh and the soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces. “Their extraordinary sacrifices will continue to inspire future generations,” he said.
Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said in the upper house that the display of bravery and dauntlessness by the Indian military in 1971 has been remembered across India with pride and enthusiasm. “On this 50th anniversary of Vijay Diwas, we pay our glowing tributes to our brave soldiers who went beyond the call of duty to protect the pride of the nation,” he said.
“On the occasion of ‘Swarnim Vijay Diwa’ we remember the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces during the 1971 war,” defence minister Rajnath Singh tweeted.
