Taliban, which took over Afghanistan last year in August, has raised a special military unit known as ‘Panipat’, which is considered to be an apparent reference to the historical third battle of Panipat fought in 1761, where an Afghan army defeated the Marathas.
On social media, many users were saying that raising of the Panipat operational unit is a jingoistic attempt by the Taliban to spite India.
This unit will be stationed at Nangarhar, an area that borders Pakistan. Some images of the Panipat unit were recently shared on Twitter by a user.
This new unit is part of a broader move being initiated by the Taliban, under which the country aims to have a 110,000-member army.
