A proposal by Poland, a NATO ally, to transfer its Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets to a U.S. base in Germany to assist Ukraine’s air force against Russia was rejected by the United States.
The US has sought to fasten arms supplies to Ukraine. The Pentagon said that the prospect of operating combat aircraft from NATO territory into war zones raises serious concerns for the alliance as a whole.
NATO has already said that it does not want direct conflict with Russia and President Joe Biden has ruled out sending US troops into Ukraine to fight, something the Pentagon has said would apply to troops on the ground or in the air, flying missions.
The foreign ministry of Poland declared on Tuesday that it was ready to deploy its MiG-29 aircraft to Ramstein Air Base in Germany and put them at the disposal of the United States. It urged other members of the alliance that had other such aircraft to do the same.
