Carl Vinson, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the United States, is set to participate in the second phase of much-awaited Malabar Exercise (Phase II) from October 12 to 15.
The sea drill will take place in the Bay of Bengal and it will feature a number of complicated drills involving several frontline warships and other assets of the navies of India, the US, Australia, and Japan.
Besides the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, the US will also deploy Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champion, and Arleigh Burke-class guide-missile destroyer, USS Stockdale.
The Indian Navy will deploy its INS Ranvijay and INS Satpura, a submarine, and a fleet of P8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft, officials said.
The Japanese Navy will deploy helicopter carrier JS Kaga and Murasame-class destroyers JS Murasame and the Royal Australian Navy will be deploying HMAS Ballarat and HMAS Sirius, the officials added.
The Malabar exercise started in 1992 as a bilateral military exercise between the Indian Navy and the US Navy in the Indian Ocean. Japan became a permanent member of this exercise in 2015.
