The United States would come to Taiwan’s defense and has committed to defending the island that China claims as its own, US President Joe Biden said on Thursday.
“Yes, we have a commitment to do that,” Joe Biden said at a CNN town hall on being asked about whether the US would come to the defense of Taiwan, which has complained of mounting military and political pressure from Beijing to accept Chinese sovereignty.
In August this year, the Biden administration official said that US policy on Taiwan had not changed after the president appeared to suggest that the United States would come to the defense of the island if it were attacked.
A spokesperson of the White House said that Biden at his town hall was not declaring any change in US policy and there is no change in the policy, but declined further comment when asked if Biden had misspoken.
