President Joe Biden will send around 2000 soldiers from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Poland and Germany this week and part of an infantry Stryker squadron based in Germany will be sent to Romania, officials said on Wednesday.
This move comes against the backdrop of stalled dialogues with Russia over its military build-up at Ukrainian border. Furthermore, the officials highlighted the rising concerns across Europe that Russian President Vladimir Putin is poised to invade Ukraine and other NATO countries on its eastern flanks.
A leaked document in a Spanish newspaper indicates that the US may be willing to enter into an agreement with Russia to ease tensions over missile deployments in Europe if Moscow steps back from the brink in Ukraine.
Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, and in 2014 captured Crimean Peninsula which was part of Ukraine. Around 14,000 people have been killed in the conflict that still simmers in eastern Ukraine.
