US Secretary of State proposes to boost NATO

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is on his visit to Belgium where he visited North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters in Brussels. He vowed to rebuild and reenergize the transatlantic military alliance after it was bruised during the previous Trump administration.

Blinken is the first top US official to visit NATO since President Joe Biden assumed office in January. “I’ve come here to express the United States’ steadfast commitment to NATO. The United States wants to rebuild our partnerships, first and foremost with our NATO allies, we want to revitalize the alliance,” Blinken told reporters as he met NATO Secretary-General Jen Stoltenberg.

He also mentioned that China’s military rise and Russia’s attempt to damage the West were menaces that needed NATO to come together and urged Turkey to join the 30-member nuclear alliance. On Afghanistan, he said that a review is underway regarding the May 1 withdrawal from Afghanistan.

On Germany’s push to complete construction of a controversial gas pipeline from Russia, Blinken said, “President Biden has been very clear, he believes the pipeline is a bad idea, bad for Europe, bad for the US, ultimately it is in contradiction to EU’s own security goals. It has the potential to undermine the interests of Ukraine, Poland, and a number of close partners and allies.”
