US strikes suicide bombers targeting Kabul airport

A US airstrike on Sunday hit a vehicle carrying several suicide bombers from Afghanistan’s Islamic State before they could attack the ongoing American military evacuation at Kabul International Airport, officials said.

The airstrike came after a historic airlift by the US that saw tens of thousands evacuated from Kabul international airport. After an Islamic State affiliate’s suicide attack that killed over 180 people, the Taliban increased its security around the airfield as Britain ended its evacuation flights on Saturday.

Two US military officials called the airstrike a success. They said that the strike caused significant secondary blasts indicating the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material in the vehicle.

The airstrike was the second by the US since the airport suicide bombing. On Saturday, a strike in Nangarhar province killed an IS member believed to be involved in strategising attacks against the US in Kabul. The strike killed one person, spokesman Navy Captain William Urban said.

The rocket attack meanwhile hit Kabul’s Khujwa Bughra neighbourhood, said Rashid, the Kabul police chief. No terrorist outfit immediately claimed the attack, however, militants have fired rockets in the past.
