Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman promoted to rank of Group Captain

The ace IAF pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman has been promoted to the rank of Group Captain. During the Balakot attacks, Wing Commander Abhinandan displayed great courage by destroying a Pakistani F-16. As a result, he was also awarded the ‘Shaurya Chakra’. 

The Indian Air Force has cleared the ace officer for promotion to Group Captain, and he will be receiving his new rank shortly. The rank of Group Captain of the IAF is equivalent to Army’s Colonel rank.  

During the dogfight in February 2019 in Balakot, Abhinandan’s MiG-21 was shot down after he took down Pakistan’s F-16 and landed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He was then taken into the custody by Pakistani Army. The Indian Air Force has cleared the ace officer for promotion to Group Captain, and he will be receiving his new rank shortly. 

Wing Commander Abhinandan belonged to 51 Squadron based in Srinagar and was tasked to foil an aerial attack launched by the Pakistani Army on February 27, 2019.
